Salt Lake Temple Project

This project not only highlighted Dustin & Partners’ expertise in geotechnical and structural monitoring but also reinforced our commitment to preserving the integrity of important cultural landmarks while integrating cutting-edge technology.
Client: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Project Location: Salt Lake Temple, Utah
Scope: Structural Monitoring & Alert Notification Systems
Dustin & Partners was commissioned to provide instrumentation and monitoring solutions for the Salt Lake Temple as part of its extensive renovation and seismic upgrade project. This historic temple, originally completed in 1893, is a cultural and religious landmark, making the structural upgrades both technically demanding and sensitive to preservation concerns.
Given the high seismic activity in Utah, our role was critical in ensuring that the Temple’s structure could withstand potential earthquakes while preserving its architectural integrity. Dustin & Partners played a key role in the following areas:
• Seismic Monitoring Installation: We deployed an array of accelerometers and displacement sensors at key structural points throughout the temple. These sensors continuously measure the building’s response to ground motion and potential shifts, offering real-time data for the engineers working on the seismic retrofitting.
• Structural Health Monitoring (SHM): Long-term monitoring was crucial for detecting any movement or stress within the building over time. We installed strain gauges on vital load-bearing walls, pillars, and foundations to provide constant feedback on the internal stresses acting on the structure.
• Data Collection and Reporting: Using state-of-the-art data platforms, the sensors were connected to a centralized system that aggregated real-time data. Our system also provided automated alerts to the engineering team for any unusual readings, helping to ensure immediate action if necessary.

• Vibration Analysis: During the construction and retrofitting process, we monitored the vibration impacts caused by heavy machinery, making sure the historic stonework and interior features were not compromised.
• Post-construction Monitoring: Following the completion of the seismic upgrades, Dustin & Partners continued to monitor the building’s structural health to ensure that the retrofitting measures were performing as expected. We provided periodic reports to both the church and engineering teams to guarantee the long-term stability of the Temple.
